Let’s talk about doing what you love. Doesn’t that sound like a fairy tale?
I find that there’s so many people currently that are in depressed, frustrated and angry moods because they are not doing what they love.
And I’ll tell you why.
We have been conditioned to believe that we can’t make money doing what we love. We have been conditioned to believe that it makes no sense doing what we love because it’s a waste of time. If it’s not leading to a quick result, we have been conditioned to believe that doing what you love is cute if you’re younger, but when you’re older, it’s time to have responsibilities. It’s time to be realistic. It’s time to be serious about life.
Can you see why there’s so many people who don’t do what they love right now? You may find yourself in a place in your life where you are not happy, and you feel stuck. You are frustrated. You don’t know where to turn and you have no idea because you’re stuck. You’re wondering, what is it going to take to allow you to get that next excitement in your days and that next happiness in your life. The key here is finding out what you love to do and start doing it wherever you are. I am where I am today because I decided I wanted to start doing what I love to do. This transition took place over time.
I’m inspiring so many lives because I decided to take some steps toward my passion of speaking.
I worked in the call center for eight years. It was just over two years ago that I had decided that I was going to leave and pursue my dream and my vision of becoming a world-renowned speaker, self-development coach and entrepreneur. But it didn’t happen overnight. Let me tell you right now, nothing happens the way that you think it’s going to happen. The universe has things that will unfold in ways unimaginable. You’re going to wonder how in the hell did this take place? I worked in that call center for eight years. And yes, it was a job that provided me with great benefits. It provided me with good relationships with people and great connections.
But it wasn’t where my heart was.
I did it because just like most people, I was conditioned to believe that once I went to college and obtained my degree everything else would work out for me. All I had to do was get a good job, find something that was stable and safe, that gave me good benefits. Happiness would follow. For some people, that is the case. But that wasn’t my story. This is something I want to deeply share with you. Be aware of what is your story. If you’re living a life and it’s not your story, you’re never going to be happy. You’re never going to find that next level of excitement or opportunity to create your own fulfillment and meaning.
Instead, you will continue to hide behind masks, trying to play to the tune of what other people want you to be and do. So, back to my conversation about the call center. It was within the last two years I started asking myself questions. Why am I not happy? What do I need to do to be happy? I became a courageous creator of change. I stopped complaining and started looking at what I could change about myself that could help me get out of this environment.
Most of the people that I knew in this job setting would quit, go somewhere else and then three months later, they’re complaining about that job, that position, and that organization. It was because they took that attitude with them.
They did it just to get out of something that was frustrating them, but they didn’t know why they were getting out of it exactly and what they really needed to do to make themselves happy. I had always been an advocate for speaking, for communication, for positivity, for optimism. I remember sitting at my desk and people would just come over from their cubicles just to talk, “Hey Adrian, I just would like to talk to you for a moment? Whenever I talk to you, I feel inspired and energized to take on this very stressful environment.”
Now I worked in the trauma scheduling unit for one of the largest hospitals in the United States at that time. That was stressful. I lead a team of five and our job every day was to schedule numerous appts and surgeries with families and sometimes these things would get cancelled. And you can imagine the number of calls we would receive with frustrated people. I had to learn how to deal with the stress levels, and I had to learn how to teach my team how to deal with these unexpected changes that came about, which is the reason why I love talking so much about change and challenges. I was built for it!
I still understood that even though I was great at helping my team members become better and more efficient, it was still a problem. I wasn’t happy there. What could I do while I’m here at work that could give me the extra little bit of encouragement to find the exit strategy? The exit strategy of where I do not want to be to where I want to go. And that exit strategy entails finding out what is meaningful to you and what you love to do.
I love speaking. I just love getting in front of people and inspiring them to create change in their lives. Although it may scare the crap out of other people, I love doing it and it gives me goosebumps. Speaking is in my blood. I want nothing more than to speak, inspire and change the lives of so many people.
Who do you know that’s looking for a speaker for their teams, event or meeting? I would love to set up a meeting with them.
